About Sigrún
Sigrún grew up in Önundarfjörður, in the Westfjords, where winter means three hours of daylight and a school bus on skis. She trained as a wilderness paramedic in Reykjavík and spent six winters running search-and-rescue radio in Ísafjörður before she guided.
She runs the Aurora Camp at Kangerlussuaq, from the first stove lit to the last tent folded, and she carries a notebook in which every night’s sky, wind and activity index is logged. Nine years of notes now.
She sleeps three hours a night in camp and says she has never been tired there.
Knocking on every tent
In February 2026 the aurora came at ten past two, and Sigrún went from tent to tent in her socks. Nobody swore at her. A woman from Chennai, in her first winter, stepped outside in a sleeping bag and stood without moving for forty minutes.
“I do not wake people for the forecast,” Sigrún says. “I wake them for the sky.”
